Files slow to open on domain

By alanf ·
When my P4 WinXP Pro computer with lots of memory is connected to a network, files open *VERY* slowly if I double-click on the file from Windows Explorer. This is true even for small files located locally on my c: drive. However, if I disconnect from the network, or open the file by first opening the application (e.g. MS Work, Excel, NotePad, etc.) and then use the "File Open" dialog, the file opens in just a second rather than taking a minute or more.

I've seen other posts on the web that describe this problem, but have not found a solution that works for me.

Thanks.

Just a shot in the dark here but does do the DNS settings point to a NAT router/firewall rather than directly to a dedicated local or internet DNS? I had 2 users with XP laptops which would slow to a crawl when connected to the LAN and correcting the above cured both problems.(I had other non XP clients, similarly configured but did not show this problem)
