Firewall in Linux

Hi,

To set up firewalling extensions in linux, as far as I know is woks with Red Hat distributions or with SuSe distributions. The easyest way to set this up is using a red hat distribution kernel 2.2.x or higher, you can set it up installing the kernel extensions with the linuxconf utility, follow the menu to the firwalling options, then set the rules you need, don't forget to set up the masquerading rules so your public addresses are not routed outside your Vlan.

If you are using Suse, you have to set the secutity extensions. Configure rc.firewall, and place the rinetd. Read the how-to files and the man pages. Set the ipchains to be shure that the changes are working and that the rules are correctly installed.

If you have a diferent distribution you can use the ipchains utility to set up the firewalling rules. This utility is not friendly, and be careful because the only way to delete a rule is with the excact match of the installed rule. See at www.linux.org the masquerading rules at the how-to files on line. There you have examples to follow.

good luck !

I advice you to put a 2.4.* kernel and use iptables it is very functional and powerful.
