First & Incremental Backups - What to Include?

By mannagift ·
I have a backup program and don't know which Windows system or other Windows files {C:} to include in the first and incremental backups. Obviously My Documents is checked but I don't know the others.
Thanks, Mary

Depends

In a perfect world you would just do a full system backup each time the program runs.

If you need to do the incrementals then you will need to configure 1 full backup per week and the rest incrementals.

As for what to back up, again the more of the system the better. It's very important that you get as much of the windows directory as you can as well as the system state. With the program files it's going to depend on how many changes are made to them during any given week.

The thing to keep in mind is that if your system crashes and you need these backups to recover you will need to start with the last full backup and then add each incremental that was done after it. So if you only do a full once a month and you machine dies on the next to the last day of the month, you're going to be busy recovering as many as 30 backup files to get you back to where you were. If you do a weekly backup then the most you woujld have would be 6 files.
If you do a full backup every night then you only need that 1 file to recover the system.

This will, of course, depend on how much rom you have to back the machine up to.

Best of luck
