flashplayer won't install

By Daz'n'Ash ·
This system is a Dell Dimension 8250 with 512mb Ram and Windows XP Home. There is ample hard disk free space.

The problem: We have tried to install Macromedia Flashplayer but even though no error messages show, it simply gets stuck in a never ending cycle of installing. Installation goes through as it should, but it is not there and continnually prompts to download and install it.

How can this be resolved?

The problem could be in your system configuration that has pop-up blockers,a firewall, and disabling the anti-virus

Make sure that cookies are enabled in order for java to run
Hope this helps

yes, what firewall products in use here? if not a blocked download, then:
anybody been fiddling with file permissions? have you tried install flashplayer under a new account belonging to the administrator's group? is this xp sp2? anything in the event logs. any other problems installing software? how does the Add/Remove programs file list look. does it have big gaps in it?

'nother idea: manually uninstall flash(assuming you can't thru Add/Remove Programs)
here is some about that from the macromedia support website:
How to remove Flash Player from your computer:
Download the Macromedia Flash Player Uninstaller:
Flash Player 8 uninstallers
Windows: uninstall_flash_player.exe (178K)
Mac OS X: uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg (278K)
Flash Player 7 uninstallers:
Windows: uninstall_flash_player.exe (155K)
Mac OS X: uninstall_flash_player_osx.hqx (815K)
Flash Player Archived uninstallers
Mac OS 8.x, 9.x: uninstall_flash_player.hqx (33K)
Save the file to your system, choosing a location where you can find it (for example, your Desktop). Macintosh users may need to open or unstuff the hqx file.
Close your browser completely.
Run the uninstaller. This will uninstall Macromedia Flash Player from all browsers on the system.
If you have problems uninstalling, to uninstall on earlier Macintosh operating systems, or to uninstall from only one browser for testing purposes, perform a manual uninstall. For instructions, refer to How to uninstall the Macromedia Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX Control (TechNote tn_14157).

The odd thing about this is that no firewall is blocking it and all file permissions are set as default, nothing has been changed there. It does show in the list of installed programs, but whenever visiting a site that requires flashplayer, it wants to install it again.

sgt_shultz you may have something there. The user has Administrative rights, however, she cannot change certain permissions. It is XP Pro with SP2

What event logs are you referring to?

The download itself is not being blocked, that happens as it should. As does the removal through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, tried that and even deleted manually the remaining folder after deltion. Still the problem remains.

No error messages appear at all.
