I have a umax scanner which came with adobe photo delux le, software is great for photographs. Has the ability to rebuild damaged pictures by duplicating in a paintbrush mode from another spot on the photo. Used it to make over old cracked and torn pictures, replaced missing eyes and eyebrows etc.. nice but its also 3 years old, the newer ones I'ld expect to be even better. USB speed compared to my previous parrallel port epson are fantastic too, scans a page worth of photos in under 30 seconds, compared with arounnd 15minutes-hour. Software for rendering is better as well. I like the umax line!

I like my Mustek
www.mustekdirect.com

I just picked up an Epson Perfection Photo with a 35MM slide / transparency adapter, but have not had time to install it and check it out.

It looks to be built just a little less rugged than my old Mustek.

I recommend looking at the innards of the scanner through the glass.
A 'quality' scanner will have at least 1 round rod running the full length for the scanner drive, and some form of toothed belt for the scanner drive.

I also like scanners where it is easy to remove or raise the lid to allow scanning large objects.

Most name brand scanners come with acceptable software for image capture and editing.

If you need more power than comes with the scanner, check out the following:

U-Lead Photo Impact
Adobe Photoshop Elements
JASC Paint Shop Pro
