Folder display keeps changing

By Nick in Austin ·
Every time I open up "My pictures" folder (and others), I have to hit "view" - "details". Then on the description bar (which includes file name, size, etc) I have to right click to add "date created" and increase the space alotted for name, as wellas change the file order. If I close the folder these changes revert to their original values. I have tried using Lock and unlock toolbars to no avail. How do I give each folder its own settings which will remain until I change them? Thanks in Advance.

have you tried to make them permanent by going to TOOLS-->FOLDER OPTIONS-->VIEW from Windows Exlorer? There is an options to set the folder from there.

This doesn't make anything permanent. It just gives you the option to make all folders like this one or "reset" folders, whatever that means or does.

try going to the 'View' menu, select 'Choose Details...', this opens a window where you can select which fields to display. Highlight the field you want to adjust by a single click on it. At the bottom of the window is a box called 'Width of selected column (in pixels)' set a new width size and then select the 'OK' button to save the changes.

You may have to do this a few times whilst you work out the exact number of pixels you want for each column.

This works on my Win XP Pro as a permanent change to that folder only. To apply this to all the folders you would have to make this change and then go to 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'View' tab, and use the 'Apply to all folders' button.

This is a permanent fix for the details themselves, but it doesn't affect what i see when I open the folder. I set it to view details, in reverse date order. this works for a day or two and then one day I open it up and I'm back to thumbnails. SoI have to do it all over again.

I tried answer one, but the route described just takes you to an option menu where you can select to make all folders alike, but you can't really tailor anything. It did get me thinking that Windows explorer was the place to get started. I right clicked on the folder and then went through properties where I customized the folder, and so far the changes seem to be sticking. Then I looked and Answer 2 had come through. It was the better of the two answers.

After customizing your view as you want, do you try "Apply to All Folders" button located under Windows Explorer | Folder Options | View tab.
