Font files, .ttf changed to .dat files

A friend sent me some .ttf files, but if I save them to a folder and then look at the files, they are .dat files and won’t open with the Windows Font Viewer.

Tried changing the file association, but no luck.

Running Windows XP Pro, SP2.

Recently made changes to PC via Services (services.msc).
