For now, unwired means unlisted. That may change

In October, most major cell phone carriers plan to start compiling a publicly accessible listing of wireless phone numbers.

I'm wired and listed

by DC_GUY In reply to For now, unwired means un ...

Considering that the excuse most people offer for even having a cell phone is that it makes it easier for other people to contact them, I can't imagine why any of them would object to being listed in a directory. As long as it doesn't include their address, etc.

That's the way our listing is in the local phone book. We put up with the occasional annoying phone call -- most of which are NOT triggered by being listed in an obscure semi-rural phone directory -- and we're content that if the person reaches our answer machine, informing him that nobody's home, he can't just look up our address and drive over with his van and a lockpick.

Frankly I wish there were a directory of e-mail addresses.

Happily unlisted

Coincidetally I just gave up my wired phone and now exclusively use my wireless phone. I spoke to my wireless provider before making the move. They said, as the article on says, that people would have to opt into directory listing.

Three years ago I unplugged my wired phone in order to get away from telemarketers. I would plug my wired phone in when I wanted to make a phone call or if I was expecting a phone call. Otherwise the phone was unplugged. This worked pretty well, but going exclusively wireless is better.

Telemarketers can rot in ****.
