Forgot password/GRUB/RedHat Linux 7.2.4

By 1i1m01e ·
I forgot my password. According to the instructions that I have, I need to boot the system as 'linux single' at the GRUB or LILO 'boot:' prompt. How do I stop GRUB while it's running so that I can re-set my password.

Thanks,

Minina

I believe in Grub you can hit 'e' or 'p' to get to edit mode so you can pass information through. If that fails try booting from your boot rescue disk, or cd-rom into rescue mode.

Hope that helps!

not sure about grub, but if you can pass an argument try passing simply "1" to start with (to go in runlevel 1) if that fails (sometimes it asks you for your maintenance password) try passing

init=/bin/bash

that will get you straight to a prompt, bypassing everything else. your disk will be mounted read-only however so to change your password you will need to do something like

mount /dev/hda1 / -orw,remount

then you can just use passwd to change your password
