forgot the root password in solaris 7 x8

I am running solaris 7 for x86. I forgot what I set my root password to and don’t have any accounts with equal rights. I need to know if there is a way to put the solaris into single user mode so I am able to change the root password without first having root access, or completley reloading the system.

You could always crash it then interupt the boot sequence… 🙂

Not that I would recommend that approach. Besides, it might not work anyway. I would download Crack and run it from any user account and let it break the password for you. The last version I used even output to a nice HTML page for easy reading…

if you boot from a floppy or cd you should be able to mount the file system and fix up the passwd file somehow.

Following on from answer 3. If the password is stored in /etc/passwd, the second field will be set to some encrypted stuff (the fieldsep is a ‘:’). If you delete the contents of that field for root, so the root line starts with “root::” you shouldthen be able to log in with no password.

If you’re using the shadow file (second field of /etc/passwd will be a single “x”) you can probably do the same trick with /etc/shadow. If you’re using NIS+ you probably need to reinstall.

Answer 4 is right on the money. I’ve been there with DEC Alpha and HP-UX. If you can boot to single user mode (Don’t know how on Solaris), you can make the changes to the passwd file.
