What exactly are you trying to document. There is alot of different information out there.

If you are just trying to document IP's to machines. I prefer using an exel spreadsheet.

I seperate each workbook into the appropiate subnet and document IP's that way.

If you are trying to inventory everything, then I would use a db program such as track-man or track-it.

It all depends on what you are trying to do. When I first started though, I used excel for everything. It gives you themost flexibility because you can define what you you want and make the form anyway that your heart desires.

Got a copy of Visio. Start with a visual document of your network, servers, the segments they sit on, their IPs. Put in routers connecting segs, etc. In some networks a good diagram can be enough to keep the stuff straight, depending on what yourreally trying to keep documented.

For PC and software inventory, use Excel or a Access DB. I have some examples I could send if you like, but I will not send any diags of my network (sorry).

My only other advice is keep it as simple as possible. Don't start adding duplicate info to several sources. You will be out of date soon, and not be able to trust any of the sources.
