Formatting does not harm the hard drive..it only erases all data. However like anything else..too much is not good. Constantly formatting may cause bad sectors over a period of time.

Formatting will not damage the hard drive (and it really doesn't erase the data. There are programs which can unformat drives).

Formatting does read each sector of the hard drive and check the integrity. If problems with the sector are found the format process will mark the sector as bad. This sector will not be used.

If you are formatting frequently and finding the number of bad sectors increasing, it could be an indication of a failing hard drive.
