Formula

Is there a way to specify a formula to do something if the critera DOES NOT equal something. For example: I am doing a SUMIF formula and I want it to say: = SUMIF(range does not equal) as opposed to SUMIF(range=). I know this is not the complete formula, I just need to know if the NOT EQUALS can be valid.
