Forum format sucks...

By armourbl ·
Why does Tech Republic use this style of forum format. Why can they use a format that allows you to read the responses in succession.

It is very annoying to have to look at a tree of response subjects and view them individually.

Wrong place

by timwalsh In reply to Forum format sucks...

Ben, while you are very likely to get lots of agreement from those of us that regularly visit this forum, if you are expecting to get any replies from the peoplethat run the forum, this is the wrong place to post comments and suggetions. All the TechRepublic forums are essentially non-monitored/mediated.

To make comments/suggestions about the site (and maybe even cause changes to be made), you need to use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page and choose the appropriate link there. They may not reply quickly, but they almost always reply evetually.

And yes, if you spend a lot of time here, you will find MANY annoyances about the site.

I concur, but the people that post here make it worth putting up with the "inconveniences".

You nailed it Mrafrohead. :-) Of course, it contradicts all those postings about wanting nothing to do with people.

I believe it was Chas who suggested using the print function to improve viewing. Right clicking the print icon and opening the link makes the long discussions much easier - all in one window with lines between threads. Selecting open link in new window makes it easier to jump back to where I want to toss my thoughts in.

Completely understood. I didn't really mean to sound so rude either. It doesn't suck, it just isn't very productive or proficient. I guess I just expected more from a site that seems to have so much technical knowledge.

I went ahead and sent thema message from the contact option with a link to this discussion thread. So everyone please post your comments so we can show how much everyone agrees/disagrees...

TR - if you're reading this:

by mrafrohead In reply to Thanks

If you can include a Live Chat type forum, I am most interested in that type of thing. Instead of a forum where you post and wait, if it were live and you could directly speak with your peers that'd be ideal in my opinion.

And so we're clear here, I'm not talking about some cheesy AOL type chat room with pimply little kids trying to cyber each other, but a nice professional type of environment where we can help fix problems as they are done here and at the same time, hold live conversations.

This is just my opinion, and I am more than happy to Moderate if needed and also run security to the best of my abilities.

I like the clean format, control of who I allow to contact me, and low overhead as compared to MSN or YM. There are discussion lists and interest groups as well.

I'm thinking more along the lines of IRC.

From there, it can be open forum. Or closed at the blink of an eye. I have a very very small botnet that can be used to help moderate. It's good for mild security. Only problem with it is that they are all on one IP. So a truly determined person CAN do a takeover if they really want to by DoS'n me...

When I can afford it, I intend on purchasing multiple IP's and setting up each one on it's own IP. But until then, this has to do

But withIRC versus ICQ - everyone can see everyone talk at the same time. And there's still personal messages and all that jazz. It can also be ported through a website so you don't have to install any additional software on your machine. You just have to make sure your firewall is configued so the ports necessary are open.

Yes, I do contradict myself a lot, but as you get to know me better, you'll get to know that I have a lot of "special exceptions"

IE: I don't like people in general, BUT if you're someone I know, as I'm beginning to get to know you guys in here (and you's know's who's you's are;)) you fall out of the people category and into your own categories. Like Oldefar, you are in the "Oldefar" category I guess, better put. You aren't in general with people, but now you're a person.

I knowthis doesn't sound gramatically correct, but it gets the point across. I like persons, not people.

As for the print thing, I'm going to try that out and see how it works for me:) Great Idear!
