free books on mysql

The best place to get the info you're looking for is at:
http://www.mysql.com/documentation

Common SQL standard statements will work. MySQL 3.23 has limited transaction capabilities, no triggers and no stored procedures. Good luck.

Also, specifically some important sections to read up on:

MySQL compatibility (with other servers, SQL92, etc.)
http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/o/Compatibility.html

MySQL access control (users, privileges, etc.)
http://www.mysql.com/doc/P/r/Privilege_system.html

MySQL data types (vs. other servers)
http://www.mysql.com/doc/O/t/Other-vendor_column_types.html
