frustrated with windows...

By madcapmagician ·
This is my situation.. my laptop died.. it cam with win XP pro preinstalled.. ran fine for several years now 5 yrs later im looking at having to get a new laptop. but untill then I figured I would upgrade my windows 2000 pro to XP this installation has been running bug free since well 2001 .. now i figured its time to upgrade. I find out that my copy of XP pro doesnt support upgrading.. ok not a problem I save all the stuff i want to keep, and do a clean install.. BUT heres the tricky part... I go to find my product code and It is gone.. lost .. non existant.

now I know there have been people who say that the code doesnt exisit on the CD, but if you think about it it has to be in there somewhere, How else is it going to be checked to see if it isthe same one that came with the package.. the code has to be on the CD somewhere, encoded in one of the files... there has to be a way to find it otherwise how would the set up program know if the code u input is valid or not ?

so my question is as the legal owner of a copy of XP how do I get my system running with out letting microsoft crwal into my wallet again for something I already paid them for ?
