FTP routing in UNIX network.

By eric.brown ·
Have two SCO OpenServer servers. One is 5.0.4 and the other is 5.0.5.

Both are on the same subnet 100.x.x.x/24.
FTP clients from the 100.x.x.x/24 subnet can ftp to both servers with good performance.
FTP clients from an alternate subnet 10.x.x.x/24 can ftp to both servers, but performance is poor to the new 5.0.5 server. Why and how can I fix it?

The alternate subnet 10.x.x.x/24, how is it routed to your 100.x.x.x/24 network? Does it route through any firewall?

Please post additional info as comment

There is just one router. It's actually a layer 3 switching hub. All boxes are connected to layer 2 switches directly. All layer 2 switches are connected via fiber optics to the layer 3 switch. Both subnets reside on the same physical network, but are logically separated using VLANS. There are 2 VLANS: one for each subnet. Any box on the 10.10.10 subnet is on VLAN1, any box on the 100.100.100 subnet is on VLAN2. There is a simple setting for each port on the layer 2 switches.

Firewall is a good question. Also if you are subnetted I guess you are using some sort of switch/hub. Check this device for collisions and check your port speed. I've seen this cause a lot of problems and is usually most noticeable with ftp performance, but ping performance would be normal. Sometimes when the server and the switch are both set to auto-negotiate one will negotiate 100FD and the other will go to 100HD. If that is the case you will have collisions. To correct this you can force the server/workstation and the switch to the same mode/speed and not use auto-negotiate.
