Global Address List: Is it possible to export a filtered list?

MS Outlook – 2003 SP2
Exchange – unsure of version

I am a general user trying to ascertain how easy/hard it is for our IT department to filter then export the Global Address List as well as maybe a point in the direction on where I can find this documentation if possible. I have asked the question of our IT department with no answer and would really like to know if this is possible.
