Depends of course on what you are looking for...

Project 2000/2002(just out) is a good all purpose tool if you want to do Gannt charts, some basic costing and resource mapping. Project 2002 allows some pretty nifty collaborative features to have project servers with multiple users sharing files at the same time.

Microsoft has pretty much gobbled up the low end of the market, so there isn't that much competition in that end of the price range.

A little up scale are companies like Scitorwith PS Suite, Planview and KM project - these are for companies that require more from their tools.

Finally at the high end you have tools like Primavera and Artemis which are designed for serious multi year projects, and have interfaces withfinancial systems etc. These tools are very expensive.

I am not looking at a software with extensive features. What I am look, ing at is some software with basic project planning, time lines, determining release dates, basic cost estimates etc. Are there no free options.

One web site a friend of mine (a very experienced project manager) uses is www.eproject.com
There is a free version and a pay version. The free version lets you save documents, set up multiple users, set up discussion threads, manage timelines andother project manager stuff like that.

Let me be clear I don't care about points.

But if you want to reject everyone's answer, do it based on the question you asked, not on something you didn't mention - which is that it should be free.

I have been managing projects for 10 years, and I have never seen anything in this area for free. In the early 90s some companies had products which do the basics, as you require, that cost a couple of hundred dollars. They have all been eaten out of market share by MS project.

If you don'tsee the value of a good tool for three or four hundred dollars, then perhaps you ought to re-evaluate your persepctions. If it saves you time on an ongoing basis, that price is not too high.

Please do not misunderstand. I am teaching students in a part of the world which is not very well to do financially. I am restrained as far as budgets are concerned. I do not mean any offence towards you, in fact I value youe help & suggestions

Now that I know that you are looking for free options, you can download a version of IMSI's Turbo Project.
www.imsisoft.com

I also had a work project last year to find some freeware, and found several trial and low cost share-ware options searching through www.32bit.com
