That depends on the work. For making games and professionally editing video’s you need a graphics card. For writing a document or a presentation or making a spreadsheet you don’t.
And it depends on the motherboard. There are motherboards then don’t have their own embedded graphics, so definitely need a graphic card. That are the motherboards meant for gaming computers, where is would be a waste of money because the user definitely buys a high-grade graphic card anyway.
But it could well be the school recommends using a cheaper Chromebook. Or, more likely, recommends a loptop (much easier to take with you) without high-end graphic card above a desktop with such a card. Better ask the school what you need.

It would be useful just to have it and not need it vs needing it but not having it further more some school pc are in all thing considered can be pretty good when it come to gaming although it wont be nice looking.
