If you eat and drink and live healthy, sleep enough and you can heat your home in the winter, you can very well survive without a phone. In fact, people do it already for centuries, even in the USA.

Bell made the first phone in Scotland, in March 1876. Elisha Gray from the US asked for a patent 2 hours after Bell did.
