Grey Ad Boxes

By john.cb1 ·
I have just installed Nortons Internet Security and i am still getting Grey ad boxes appearing.
What do i need to do in this software to stop this.

Is there any other programs that will do the same as Nortons Internet Security.

Do i need another software to get rid of the grey boxes if so what.

What is the best software to use to clean up my hard drive i.e redundant dlls, bits let over from a program i have uninstalled.

You did not mentions the operating system, so I will take this as Win 2k or XP home / pro...

The grey ad boxes are a "feature" if you will of these 2 products. It is a service that runs in the background called "MESSENGER". It is used to send and receive messages between computers on networks. The spammers have their own little pain-in-the-butt programs that basically send messages throughout the internet daily.

Goto start --> Settings --> Control panel --> Administrative tools --> Services

In services are all the services that run in the background. Scroll down to messenger. double click on it to open the properties box. Stop it and set from automatic to disabled.

The only reason this should be enabled if this is a corporate computer that has outside messaging blocked.

Good luck.
