gridlines in word

whenever a client opens a file, gridlines (not table gridlines) are displayed in print layout view. I can wipeout them by going to run, windword.exe /a, but they reappear when opening saved files. if she logs onto another machine or another user opens these files, the gridlines do not appear. i would like to know what setting is causing thesed nonprinting gridlines and how to remove them. the application is word 2000 running on a windows 2000 machine. these are not table gridlines and fill up the screen to the margin boarders.
