gridlines in word

By mgates ·
whenever a client opens a file, gridlines (not table gridlines) are displayed in print layout view. I can wipeout them by going to run, windword.exe /a, but they reappear when opening saved files. if she logs onto another machine or another user opens these files, the gridlines do not appear. i would like to know what setting is causing thesed nonprinting gridlines and how to remove them. the application is word 2000 running on a windows 2000 machine. these are not table gridlines and fill up the screen to the margin boarders.

One way to fix it would be to rename/delete Normal.dot
Also display the Drawing toolbar. Click on Draw and Grid Remove check from display gridlines on screen.

This did not work. that is why i tried winword.exe/a which only works temporarily until they open another file and then all future files display the gridlines.

Despite saying these are not table gridlines, I would still doublecheck the Table, Show Gridlines, and make sure it is off/set to not display.

But I agree with response #1 -- if the lines disappear when you start it with /a, it sounds very much as if the Normal.dot is corrupt.

It is definitely not table gridlines. and i wiped out the normal.dot file and it did nothing. i can temporarily fix the problem by using winword.exe/a, but it reverts back to gridlines when opening files. the files do not appear to be corrupt, because other people can open them without problems.

Try Tools>Templates and Add-ins.
Remove the checkmark from any od templates.
Using the /a switch runs Word without any add-ins (or normal.dot)

I checked the templates in a document that was open, but unfortunately there weren't any add-ons to delete.

Question:
1. You turned off the gridlines in Draw? Saved that as the option on client machine?

2. You created a brand new normal.dot template and saved it, for their default?

Still did not work?

Bravo! did not know you could display gridlines for non-editing objects. the user had inadvertantly turned gridlines on and it kept getting applied to the normal.dot template. thanks for your help.
