Hands free road talk on my laptop?

By lassthompson ·
Hello. Recently a friend bought a new SUV with a speaker phone built in. My GPS is run by an XP Professional SP2 laptop on a car mount with USB ports built in. I'd like to have a hands free phone connection without the necessity of buying a cell phone, although I understand a microphone is necessary. Is there a way to use my laptop as a phone either with or without magic jack while driving cross country?

As long as your laptop has a mic and speakers then it could be possible.

Though you will have to anchor the laptop down some how while doing cross country. Voip comes to mind by then i have not given this a good test out as yet.

VOIP requires an internet connection

unless you have something like a Verizon Air Card, then it will be hard to keep an internet connection while you drive.

That is the reason for a cell phone, better connections while driving. Many new cars are allowing bluetooth cell phone connecions with built-in speaker/microphone. The one that comes to mind is the MS Sync system. Next year MS sync will be in other brands besides Ford.

What you said is true except that on some phones you cam have Voip.

And with this the laptop can be configured through this, but then why not just use a bluetooth headset with it configured to the phone.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

My thanks to all of you. Allow me to ask for clarification. What I'm seeing is - a laptop can be used as a mobil / cell phone IF you have a cell phone. Is that correct? And, if so, is that the sole method available? Is it the most cost effective? Perhaps I should restructure the question. Is there a way to get mobile broadband on my laptop without using the cell phone as a modem?

Thanks again for your help.

The laptop needs some form of connection to the outside world.

As mentioned, there are cards that will give you continuous internet

access. The Verizon Air Card is one, but other vendors have similar. Where I work, field people have ther Verizon Air Card and have internet access pretty much anywhere in the metropolitan area. If you are driving in more deserted areas, there might not be good reception.

Good luck.

Yes there is, read more here for your info..
Though if you are in the good old Usa then the same applies. But it is expensive.
