Hard drive & motherboard capability

By newjughead ·
I really need some advice. I have a 200 gig hard drive that i just plugged into my mother board. The board only recognises 128 GB, so i load up windows etc. My question is, if i later connect my 200 gig drive to a motherboard that supports it, will i get use all 200 or only 128, will that added 71 gigs be lost forver now that I have formatted the drive? Thanks for the help.

Partitions

by mjd420nova In reply to Hard drive & motherboard ...

If you set it up now, with 128GB, then thats all that system will see. It would then be able to see the whole 200GB when connected to another system, but it will have already been partitioned and formatted with 128GB. You then could set up a partition for the remaining space and use it for storage. The only way to recover it as a whole 200GB, would be to save your data to a removable storage medium or other device, remove the original partition and then install a new one, with the whole 200GB available to install the OS.
