Has TR's Search Always Been Bad?

By Adam S ·
Maybe I'm spoiled by Google. Maybe I expect more from technology. Whatever it is, I can't seem to get satisfactory results from my TechRepublic searches.

For example, I am trying to "install windows XP without IE" and so I search said phrase. All I get are articles that have Windows XP in them, regardless of actual content, in chronological order. Now, I'm not totally sure, but I don't think that not being able to add a Domain has much to do with removing IE from your XP installation.

So, what am I doing wrong? How SHOULD I be searching TR?

We apologize...

Search has been one of those "we have to get it just right so we can't fix it right now" eternal problems that TechRepublic has endured for longer than we'd like to admit. The good news: When the site relaunches this fall, it will do so with a revamped site search engine. In the meantime, I suggest you use the dirty trick that some of us insiders have relied upon for quite some time...

Enter your search into Google, and use the site:techrepublic.com.com adjunct to search only our content. The index may be a day or two out of date (which is why we don't use Google for site search), but unless you want the latest discussions, this should return all the articles and downloads you could ever want from us.

When the new TR search is launched, believe me, we'll all be shouting it from the rooftops.
