HDD partition probs

By yiotie ·
Hi
I partitioned my HDD in to two equal parts C, & D. Part C has been set active and formatted in to FAT32.
To do all the above I used a Win98 boot disk and the choice was to Start computer with CD-Rom support.
The problem now is when I type A> e: setup to start installing Win 2kPro in drive C from the CD-ROM , the reply says that This program can not run in DOS mode.

The other problem is when I try to format the other half Of the HDD (D) the reply says: Format not supported on drive
Any suggestions Please?
Thanks
Yiotie

HDD partition probs

What size is the HDD, there is a limit as to what the Win 98 boot disk o/s will recognise. If the HDD size is an acceptable size, then using the Win 98 Fdisk program you need to enter Fdisk and create an 'extended partition' then a logical drive forthe 'D' drive. Then format it.

use Fdisk to check that the 'D' drive exists.

The boot disk is loading a virtual drive (usually as 'D' or 'E' and then assigns the CD the next available letter. It may be expecting the CD to be 'F' and not 'E'.
Best way to load Win 2K pro from the CD is to set the BIOS to boot from the CD and let it happen. Failling that I would boot to the Win 98 o/s on the floopy then use a series of single DOS commands to access and check the drive and to run the setup. If the CD is on 'E' Drive, from a use these commands (if 'F' change the first to f:\)

e
dir/w (check you have the right drive)
setup

if all else fails go to the floppy drive and

cd i386
winnt

This will run the default windows load program but takes longer than the setup file in the root directory.

Hi
For partitioning there are many bearers for each of these
1. BIOS
2. OS
3. IDE controller.
I would boot with Win98 boot disk and run FDISK again and when asked for using the large disk support answer yes, then delete the partion then create them again.
To setup Win2k you need to do either:
1. Boot from The Win2k CD you have after you set your PC BIOS to boot from CD-ROM drive.
2. Win2k create Boot Disk Floppies
How to create Win2k Boot Disks:
Boot with the Win98 boot disk insert the Win2k CD in your CD-ROM drive then type:
\Makeboot.exe where "D" is your CD-ROM drive.
then folow instruction given.

If you need more help then post a comment.

Good luck

Start installation from CD by booting from CD. If you need setup boot floppies for WinXP look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B310994

Problem why you cannot run format for drive is probable that your CD-rom is assigned as drive . You need to boot without CD support for formatting

I must be blind. It's Win2k not WinXP. Win2k has it's own boot floppys that you can make using your installation CD.

When you created the partition, did you create a logical drive?
If you did not create a logical drive, that could be the problem.

As to installing W2K, you cannot run the W2K installer from a W98 startup or boot disk.

I recommend booting from the W2K CD if your system supports it.

Otherwise, you need to run the boot disk creation utility on the W2K CD.

Alternately, you can download a bootdisk image from www.bootdisk.com

If I assume correctly you loaded 98 onto drive C:
and now want to load 2K onto

The best way is to go into the bios and set your boot up order to 1st-cdrom, 2nd-floppy, 3rd- harddrive.

Then save your settings, exit, and reboot with the 2K cdin the cdrom drive.
The cd will execute from there, then you will be able to follow the prompts and format the half as well as load windows 2k.
