Head scratcher. NIC on 2 laptops malfunction after accessing WAP setup me

I am a CE integrator. Yesterday while at a clients home working on programming a remote control I noticed that the WAP was malfunctioning. Because I had a little bit of trouble with this particular WAP previously, I called Netgear support and after an hour of drilling through boiler plate troubleshooting scripts the manufacturer issues an RMA. In the process of troubleshooting I connected my ACER laptop directly to the WAP to access the setup menus etc…. When I next tried to connect to the internet, the NIC behaved as if it were malfunctioning. I checked with my network specialist and even though could ping the card etc… he concluded that the NIC must have croaked. Today, I was back at the clients with a new WAP and a different laptop. I successfully configured the WAP but when I returned home, I no longer have internet access. When I run the command ipconfig /release, the error message reads “Media disconnected, unable to run this operation” or words to that effect.
All diagnostics point to the card being in good working order but my experience (inability to connect to the internet) would suggest otherwise. I know just enough to be dangerous (plug and pray). Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.
