Help, all my files are now chk

I was using Powerquest Partition Magic to merge two of my partitions together. The merge crashed and now the computer would not even boot to Windows. Both of my partitions were NT4.0 NTFS. I took the hard drive out and placed it in a computer that already has a Windows 2000 drive. The one partition I could get to but the other said access denied. I ran a checkdisk. It fixed a lot of problems and I can now access the disk but all of my files say dir(number).chk or file(number).chk. Are my files gone? They all have the original dates and sizes but names are wrong. Help!
