    HELP! – I can’t access Access!

    Locked

    by haycoconsulting ·

I was trying (for the first time) to secure one of my Access 2K applications (to prevent ‘tinkering’ by one of my clients employees). I went through the User Level Security Wizard in Access 2000. Now any time I try to open ANY database I get a Logon dialog box asking for Name and Password. I have a hard copy of the ‘One-step Security Wizard Report’ and I am trying to use the user names and passwords listed in the ‘Users’ section of that report. They all give me “Not a valid account name or password’ error msgbox. (I am logged on as the same user on the network as when I went through the wizard.) I have gone as far as a complete uninstall of Office 2000 and reinstall and IT’S STILL THERE. Now I can’t open ANY database on my machine – not just the one I was trying to secure. HELP!!!

User information is stored in a file that is probably left on the system during an uninstall. What I would do is goto a system that Access is working and copy this file:
      C:\program files\common files\system\system.mdw

Replace this file on your system and try access again.

Thanks Daniel. I had several system.mdw files on my machine. I tried replacing the one you suggested (from a working machine) but got the same results as before. The final fix was renaming the ‘system.mdw’ file located in the c:\temp directory to’system.OLDmdw’, obviously disabling it and, viola….I can access Access once again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and thank you, Tech Republic. This is an awesome resource.
