Help Me Decide

By jc ·
I have a problem of choosing an antivuris software amongst Trend Micro, Norton and McAfee.
I need to protect LAN with 5 servers and 400 clients that access the internet and have e-mail.
Which one would you suggest or how can you rate them with 1 =poor and 3 = best?

I have no experience with Trend Micro.

McAfee: Tends to update their .dats the quickest to combat the latest Viruses. The one major complaint I have with McAfee is software compatibility. On my company's network it would often conflict with business critical apps and eventually had to be installed in a certain process (before Lotus Notes but after Stac Reachout, etc.). PCs tended to have many issues with McAfee as well including crashing, freezing, etc.
I would rate it a 2.

Norton: We have switched to Norton. We currently have a network consisting of 40 servers (1 Novell file, 1 WINNT Lotus Domino Server at each site) and approximately 1000 users. Each sites' file server has Norton AntiVirus Server running with the latest .dats. You can setup Norton so when you are creating a UserID for a new employee, add him/her to a Norton AntiVirus Users group and when this person logs on their new PC for the first time, Norton will autoinstall on the Users PC. We did have a few issues with Norton in the beginning, but there were published patches and tip walkthroughs to get them resolved. I give it a 3.

My suggestion would be to make a list of the software your company uses and visit forums pertaining to McAfee and Norton and see if there are any known issues regarding conflicts between the Anti-Virus software you choose and your business standard apps.

You didn't mention Ontrack's Anti virus program in your question. Perhaps you have already dismissed them. But I have had issues with Norton causing problems with other software, Win Route Pro for one.
And I have tried McAfee only for a short time, and I didn't like it running a scan when machine was idle.(maybe I just didn't have settings correctly set)
But Ontrack's anti virus is bundled with Fix-It Utilities. Not only do I like their anti virus, but I love their utilities. Only registry repair program I've found that does the job right.

Look at "IN-DEFENSE" before comitting. It is a series of algorythm's that do NOT require upgrades whenever a new virus is created. Their web site tells all and it works GREAT.

We have been using Norton for last couple of years. I also used McAfee briefly. We never had any Virus problem, Norton updates are quite frequent. In my opinion, one also needs to have some policies for Net access in place. We also had some orientation session for our employhees describing danger of downloading software from unknown source etc. So IMHO, one need solid tool to protect from Virus, policies for safe net access and user's training (orinetation) to fight Virus attacks.

Hope this helps.
