With just what you have here is the solution which seems to be what everyone else in the last week has had. If it is a laptop then I'd look at your power settings. If you are set in a power saving mode it will dim your screen. If your going straight to a black screen it would be a resolution issue.

START > CONTROL PANEL > SCREEN SAVER > POWER
Change it to be ALWAYS ON and the drop downs to NEVER and see if that helps. If it does then play with it to suit your needs without it dimming.

Also there are power management tools on the PCs if yours is a store bought version.

I would....

try and go into safe mode, create another user, reboot, and log in with the new user. That way if it is a setting, thats screwing you up, this will be the most obvious... because a new user would receive the default power settings.

Give it a try and let us know if this helps or not so we can try something else.

Also when your in safe mode check your drivers and double check to see if you Video drivers are not showing a X or !.... if those show up I would try and download the correct driver and install it. To get to device manager -->start --> rightclick my computer--> "manage" --> device manager... and in there you will see the X or !...
