Help! Need a solution...

By brianbrendell ·
I'm a beginner to all of this networking stuff. I want to connect two offices that my parents have, not near each other. I don't need anything fancy and I'm looking for the cheapest solution. I just basically need file sharing, maybe print sharing, and that's about it. Just a way to access each other's files to update records, etc. Someone told me about a VPN, but I'm not sure how those work. If anyone has a solution, please let me know. Details would be good, seeing as I'm a begineer. Thanks for your patience!!

How near is not near?

by generalist In reply to Help! Need a solution...

What is the definition of 'Not Near' that you are using?

If the offices are at opposite ends of the same building, and the building isn't the size of the Pentagon, then you might be able to get away with a simple hardware solution.

If the offices are across town from each other, then a different set of solutions would work.

If the offices are in different states, and the states are not the tiny ones of the east coast, then you will need to look at something else.

You could conceivably do everything via email if there was a person at each end, making things a lot more secure than a simple network connection.

What is your set up?

Do you have Servers in each office or is it P-to-P? There are solutions for this built into NT4 Server and Windows 2000 Server. A little more info and your solution may be very simple. Do both offices have internet access? Is it broad band?
