    HELP! – odd usb behaviour

    Locked

    Hi,

I am having very annoying problem. Maybe you will be able to help me.

I am using Acer 5920G laptop running on Vista Home Premium with an ordinary corded usb mouse. My laptop has 4 USB ports: 1 on the right and 3 on the left. I usually plug my mouse into right port.

Some time ago during usual usage my mouse stopped working. The light was off and it looked like it was not getting any power. If I plug the mouse into other port it will be detected and it will work.

When I check device manager with mouse unplugged it is still there (as HID compliant). When I check that devices hardware ids they are different from when I have my mouse plugged in different port.

Sometimes this happens. The fix is to uninstall/reinstall the USB port(s).

As for the HW address being different, why wouldnt it be? Being on a different port puts it in a different location, therefore a different address.

        Hi,

I already tried removing and reinstalling usb ports (I removed all of them from device manager and let windows reinstall them) – no luck. Unless I am doing something wrong…

Does the usb port work with anything else?

Try plugging a different mouse in the right USB port to check whether the problem comes from the mouse or the port.

Go into Power Management and disable Hibernation

& Power Saving while on Mains.

If the mouse works on the right USB Port after a reboot the most likely thing is that the NB is either going into Hibernation or Power Saving and is failing to turn on the USB Port in use again. It is a fairly common problem which has got a bit better over the years but on some hardware it still occurs.
