Help with Keyboard and Screen of laptop not working

By crucheau ·
I have a laptop which keyboard isn't working so i connected an external keyboard. Now the screen of the laptop also died and I would like to use an external monitor but since I am not using the laptop keyboard, I don't have the FN key function to allow me to toggle between the external monitor and the laptop monitor. Well, is there something I can do to use the external monitor since the laptop screen doesn't work?
Thanks for your help.

As you didn't give a make or model

you could find the support manual and see if removing and re-seating the keyboard cable will get the keyboard functioning. Then you could find out that the onboard video has died. Was the external monitor working before the screen died. Maybe it's past it's use by date.

OK so I'm lost here

The keyboard of the NB wasn't working so you connected a External Monitor. So how is that going to fix the faulty Keyboard?

As for the Ability to Toggle between the On Board and External Monitors this is just a function of the Keyboard so plugging in some form of External Keyboard will cure that issue. Either a PS2 or USB depending on what the NB supports here. If you have an older NB they used to use a Y Cable to allow you to plug in a PS2 Keyboard & Mouse at the same time.

As for the monitor you may need to lock a Function Switch On or hold a Function Control Key down while you press the equivalent key on th external Keyboard to switch monitors. This is all part of the Keyboard though and the Multimedia Keyboards have different keys to do this with depending on the Keyboard. For the Basic Function Keys you do not need to install any drivers but for the rest you will need to install the Keyboard Drivers to make the extra Keys work.
