Help with Nero

By supz ·
all of a sudden my Nero stopped working to burn DVD's. You will notice in the picture below that it starts the burn process but under that where it should say "Cache of files complete" "Burning started at 4x" it does not say that. It will consistently fail at 1% even after restarts, but does not write anything to the disc so at least I am not losing each time I make an attempt. I am using version 6.6.0.3...Any suggestions besides upgrade?

Is there any other DVD burning software program that can burn ISO's?

Thank you! I am awarding 3000 tech points for this question because I do not want to have to pay for a computer tech to repair it, yay

If you are using windows XP you should be able to test the drive. Copy several files to the dvd drive with a blank cd/dvd in the drive. Then right click on the DVD drive in explorer and choose to burn the files to the cd/dvd drive (I can't remember the exact menu option). If this does not work, check to make sure the dvd drive is running in DMA mode not PIO. Do this in device manager and go to the IDE controllers and open the proper controller and adjust it accordingly. Reboot after the change. If it still does not work, try removing Nero and reinstalling. If that does not work, the drive may be junk and it is much cheeper to buy a new one than to try and repair. If you need any more help just post a comment and I will try to assist.

Roxio is another well known program that can burn ISO images.

If you hang on the ISO image burn, manually select the burn speed and choose the lowest setting. Might take a while to burn but burning at the slowest speed provides best quality.

I use Magic ISO (http://www.magiciso.com) for my ISO work. It's got a built in burning functionality that works fine on my Plextor 740A. There's a free trial version (no malware when I used it) which, as I recall, is limited to smaller ISOs. It would at least work as a test to see if it's Nero or the burner.

If you?ve had the burner for a while, though, and use it a fair amount it?s possible it?s just failing. They don?t last forever, or even like they used to.
