Hide a Partition in Win XP

By Majic11 ·
My hard disk is partitioned in to 4. On one partition I save all my office work (as backup). Is there any way I can hide the partition so that my kids cannot see it to wipe any thing off.
Thanks

Hide a Partition in Win XP

Hi, There are a number of ways that you can simulate "hiding". Based on your concerns, it would seem that the best way to prevent this type of damage would be if the partition did not exist. What I mean is if you were to install a removable HDD and install it when you want to back up your files and then remove it and lock it when you are done. There are a number of ways that you could do this. A USB drive, an IDE drive installed in a removable sliding tray, a Zip or Jaz drive, CD rewritable or CDRom. Hope this helps.

In XP you can do a number of things. You can "mount" the partition as a folder in another partitions directory structure. You can then hide this folder. Or you can leave it unmounted altogether. I am guessing you still want to have access to your partition, so you can back things up to it. Let me start by saying it is better to get a whole other hard drive for this. The reason is if your hard drive fails it will take everything on all 4 partitions with it. Whether you use your existing partition or use a new harddrive you can mount the partition as a folder in the directory structure. If the partition is NTFS you can restrict access preventing your kids from access that directory. Otherwise you can hide it and as long as you have the system set to not veiw hidden objects it will be out of sight and out of mind for your kids.
