Hotmail Attachments

By nelson.abel ·
I recently upgraded to a new computer with Windows XP Pro and McAfee Security Center. Since switching to the new machine, whenever I try to download and open a file (say a .doc or .xls file)sent as an attachment via my Hotmail account, it takes me back to a Hotmail sign-in window. This has never happened before. I still have plenty of memory on my Hotmail account, so I don't think that's the problem. I have been unable to get a response from Microsoft, so far. Any suggestions?

Hi

It seems you might have downloaded the link to the excel file hence it takes you to the hotmail signup.

Please check if the file has been downloaded and not the url for the same.

Regards

Thanks for the answer, but it didn't solve the problem. I was able to solve the problem myself via MS'"Windows Update" website. Their was a non-critical patch available (I forget which number, but it had to do with solving various "software incompatibility issues in some programs" in Windows XP. I downloaded the patch and the problem was solved!

Assuming I'm not the only person having this problem, and combined with the huge numbers of people using Windows XP, you'd think that MS's Hotmail staff would be aware of this issue.
Thank you again.

Its nice to see that someone else is having the same problem as myself... I am not having as much luck in solving the problem.

Can you help?? I can not seem to locate the windows update that you used... and am totally unable to download attachments - right back to a login screen...

My solution was for XP only. Go to Windows update, run the update query. The solution I found was a "non-critical" patch, not a "critical update".

You may also want to try enabling cookies for the Hotmail URL and see if that helps.

(new to this site - not sure how to correctly add a comment)

sorry for ambiguous before...
using XP Pro (SP II)
McAfee everything
IE

tried running the Win Update query - no updates or patches found to add...

allowed cookies for the hotmail world... still nada.

dont mean to be a pain - have a question in with Microsoft (big deal) - any other ideas? or a way for me to isolate this non-critical patch?

so so annoying
