Hotmail Spam raids Outlook work account

By dappleton ·
I have a personal Hotmail account I access at work. I also have an Outlook 2000 account for work. The spam I get in my Hotmail account also attacks my Outlook account. Anyone know how I can stop this?

Could it be that both email accounts are using the same InBox? If they are, go into the options for say... hotmail one, and change the folder to receive emails to another folder.

Thanks for reply. I could not see in the Options for Hotmail where I could redirect incoming mail. The only email I am receiving in Outlook is the spam and nothing else.

Are you importing the hotmail into Outlook? If so, the autopreview can set off "web bugs", which are embedded spacer images in HTML mail that set off cgi scripts on the server the image originates on. It contains enviroment info about your PC, including the fact that the mail addy was valid.
Either turn off the preview pane, disable HTML, or go offline before reading such spam (so the images won't set off the code on the server).

If you are accessing the hotmail from the web, and it has webbugs, your Outlook e-mail addy may be associated with your browser variables. Some browsers do, some don't. IE is an offender, AFAIK. Netscape can turn it off in preferences.
You can see discussions about this in the google usenet archives.

Put simply, Hotmail is ridled with spyware, this spyware is telling Hotmail (or other) about were you surf, how often, who provides your Internet and also email address.
Either stop using your Hotmail at work (but this will leave the spyware in place) or ask about setting the firewall levels up....

I agree with the spyware issue. And I can stop using my Hotmail account at work. But do you know how I can stop the spam from coming into my work account? The accounts are not linked in any way and the only mail that comes into my work account isSPAM. Any suggestions?

Unfortunalty, the only real way to stop SPAM is to 'unsubscribe' from each and every one that is being recieved. Some will not have a valid return email address so unsubscribing may not work. In which case you will need to report the company involved for repeatedly sending unsolicited mail (some SPAM is illegal).
At the same time, you will need to install and run an application like 'Ad-Aware' (www.spychecker.com) to remove the spyware from your system which is asking for the spam's to be sent.
I would refrain from using hotmail, especially at work, try using your standard ISP email address or get a free one from btinternet.com.
Yours Dean

what do you mean by attacks your outlook account? do you mean you have email in your work inbox that were delivered to yourname@hotmail.com address. do you have separate inboxes. I mean they should be separate by default but when you say attacks your outlook account what do you mean.
