Building the Database:

The steps in building a database are as follows:

1. Identify the entities of interest (and put boundaries on the system);

2. Define the relationships between the entities, and establish the tables in the database;

3. Identify the primary key field for each table;

4. List the attributes (fields) for each table; and

5. Establish referential integrity and foreign key relationships.

The preceding is a very small excerpt from an article at the following site:

http://www.mamag.com/fall00/west.htm

This is an excellent article on the overall design of a database.

Another database tutorial:

http://docs.roxen.com/roxen/2.2/tutorial/database/

cheers!

I do this for a living and fount a book sold by Microsoft Press titled "Access 2000" an excellant source for novice through guru. Your most time consuming task will be to learn database design AND data normalization and/or data modeling! Without them all the knowledge in the world for any database software may well fail!

Good luck - Access is an excellant choice.

There are some excellent articles and downloads on TechRepublic about database design.

Among those are the following:

Download this chapter on database design:

How do you create a logical, effective design for databases?

http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?src=search&id=r00620010430mkp01.htm

Download this collection of 60 database design tips:

Five simple database design tips

http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?src=search&id=r00820010625adm02.htm

There are quite a few articles and discussions. Simply do a TechRepublic search of database design, and you?ll get scores of articles, downloads, discussions, columns, etc?
Cut and paste the links I posted, and you?ll be taken to the articles I mentioned.

Best of luck and have a GREAT 2002!
