How can I remove w2k sp4 from a server?

By scottara2 ·
I added a new Windows 2000 member server to our domain. I applied Service Pack 4 to it without archiving. After everything was setup and running, the application vendor announced that their system would not run properly on service pack 4. Is there any way I can remove SP4, or apply another SP over it? The service pack was applied without archive. Thanks in advance!

no there is not, unfortunately you will have to rebuilt the server.
Or ask what exactly the problem is with the sp4 and their program. Sounds a bit strange to me.

Is the vendor saying it possitively WON'T work with SP4, or that there is no guarentee it will work because it hasn't been tested with SP4?

Trying to install an earlier Service Pack over an newer one is problematic at best. You run the great risk of breaking the Operating System. Your best bet would be to conduct a repair installation of Win2K. It doesn't take quite as long as a full installation, and has the effect of taking Win2K back to the original version (or whatever level is on your CD).

BTW, it is usually a BAD idea to install an OS Service Pack with archiving the old files. Without the archive, there is no way to easily roll back a Service Pack if problems occur (as you are finding out).

I could cut and paste but Microsoft should get the credit.
