How do I change password rules?

By SciFiMan ·
Solaris 2.6 - Is there a tool or file I can edit that changes the password rules from the default. That is, the parameters for type of characters (alpha, numeric, or mixed), how long the minimum password length is, how many previous passwords are remembered, etc.? Admintool lets me set the aging but I need to "shape" the passwords that users can choose. Currently using /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files. Thanks!!!

Regards,
David

To set the minimum password length you can set the value in the file /etc/default/passwd. You can raise this value to 8, but remember that for passwords with more than 8 characters only the first 8 characters are significant.

I hope that i could be useful,

Do happen to know the format, and keywords that can be used in this file? I haven't been able to find it in documentation.

Thanks,

If you want to make your unix passwords more secure, I would suggest installing the npasswd program, you can find it at the address below. There is also an address to a site that tells of how to better secure a unix box (it recommends npasswd as well).

npasswd
http://www.utexas.edu/cc/unix/software/npasswd/

securing a unix system

hope this helps,
