How Do I create a TOC when in a Office 2007 Word table?

by jhall . Updated 17 years, 8 months ago

I created an extensive Office 2007 Word document in a table with 4 columns. The first column is the heading (not styled, just typed in using Numbering of 1., 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2 etc.

I’m needing to create a table of contents because this thing is now 25 pages long and I don’t want readers to have to wade through it all to find one section.

When I try to create a TOC it’s first giving me code so I have to hit the Toggle Code from my right-click menu every time. After I do that for each line item the heading appears but, the next line down is all the commentary I have in column 2.

I just need a TOC for the first column. Do I have to convert every line to a certain heading first and how do I restrict the TOC to the first column?

Thanks.
