I had a W98 2E pc lock-up during a Norton virus scan on a file named C:\PROSCRN. I cancelled the scan, and opened Windows Explorer. When I looked at this folder, it contained 11,987 files, all with a size of 0 bytes. I clicked on the folder, I sawthat all the files had the same name: _ _ (underscore, space, underscore). I moved the folder to the recycle bin & selected empty. I got an error message stating “Cannot delete _ _ . Type in the correct file path.” PROSCRN is now gone from the pc(I think), but the files are still there. While showing empty, with the show all files box checked, the recycle bin reports that it contains 11987 files, and 2 folders. I tried to run the virus scan again, now it locked up on C:\RECYCLED\Dc1\_ _. I cancelled the scan, and went to Norton’s wipe data utility. The program went thru the motions of deleting the Dc1 (which does show up in explorer, in the recycle bin, but if you open the recycle bin directly, you can’t see it)After the program ran,it told me it failed to delete the selected files because they are write-protected. I rebooted the pc and went to the DOS prompt. I tried doing:C:\del recycled . Thinking that I would delete the recycle bin, then reload it. DOS told me that the filewas not found. I exited and completed boot-up. I checked the DOS name for the recycle bin and it is recycled. I went back to the DOS prompt and tried again. Same response-file not found. I have tried contacting both Norton and McAfee regarding this, and neither will assist me… they both say it is not a virus, and they will not help. The tech from McAfee did suggest to try del recycled in DOS, but I had already tried that. I have already been given the advise of “it’s not hurting anything,leave it alone”, but it is hurting something-the virus scan will not complete. I am at my wits end. Any help anyone can give me to get rid of this would be greatly appreciated!
