how do i get sound through linux?

Here are some links to assist with Linux sound problems.

The drivers built into the "kernel" are somewhat limited.

The best place to look for compatibility issues is the Linux Sound HOWTO at linuxdoc.org.
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO/

Here you'll find a list of sound cards that are supported by the Linux kernel.
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO/x96.html#AEN109

ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) sound drivers can be an alternative to the Linux kernel
sound drivers. (And may be your only option if the sound chip mfg does not offer a Linux driver.)

You can download the drivers
from the ALSA Web site.
http://www.alsa-project.org/
Note: the ALSA drivers are available only as code,
so you have to compile them.

That requires that you have your systems kernel source files available.

Check to see if your sound card is on the ALSA list of supported hardware.

Ok the other answer said something about alsa. It's ok.
You can also try the oss package. Install it and it will detect automatically your sound card.
You can also try the sndconf or sndconfig from the command line and it'll work...
