How do I prevent Access creating duplicate recrods when (re)loading form?

By stainsby ·
I have a master-detail form which I use for creating new & editing existing records. A glitch has shown up recently. When I reload an existing record, Access immediately creates a duplicate row in the master table. Detail records are not linked to the new record, nor are they duplicated.

I have tried disabling Allow additions, but this renders my form completely blank! - no fields present at all. It does however prevent the creation of new dupes. I've gone through my code modules for weeks and there doesn't seem to be any obvious error in my process.

From a switchboard page the user loads a search form and runs a query. From the resulting list they select a record. The id of that record and the modality for the form (CREATE/UPDATE/DELETE) are passed in OpenArgs to the Master-Detail form. The Load function looks up the whole record, sets up the fields with their data and passes the id to the details subform which loads related lines.

My forehead is covered in waffle-patterned bruises from banging it against the keyboard. Help? Please?
