    How do I remove non-accessible domains w

I upgraded 3 NT Servers (SP6a), 2 Linux Servers, and mix of 70 (WIN 95b, WIN 98 SE, WIN NT (SP6), and WIN 2000) clients to use WINS for name resolution and all use the same Domain as the PDC. All WIN 9.x machines have user level shares using the Domain for authentication. Problem, now the Network shows 6 inaccessible workgroups with names such as ?, ?, and q. I have used WINS manager to locate the machines registering these Domains and it shows that 6 WIN 95 machines with entries such as ?———-?-(P[1Bh] or ?———-?-#r[1Bh]. I have disabled Browsemaster on all machines in question, removed IPX and NetBEUI from the entire network, and recreated the WINS database. All machines are accessible only from the main Domain. How do I removethese Domains?

I don’t have a sure fire answer for your question, but here’s how I would try to fix it.
First update all the 95 machines in question to the latest service packs and patches. I haven’t heard of any specific patches, but they are not always advertised.

Next Re-Load TCP/IP on all the 95 machines.

Then re-build your WINS database AGAIN! I know this sounds like a pain.

Finally, with your sniffer on, re-register all of the clients in question.

If this sequence doesn’t work, contactme via e-mail and we’ll see what we can do.

BTW: thanks for all the detail in the question. Sorry I couldn’t give you any better answers.

      Mike

Sounds like a WINS resolution problem on the client side. Make sure that they are Hybrid in there registration. Also try removing IP and then reinstalling IP on the 6 clients.

I know what your problem is it is NetBIOS Applications being run on your network either on the server or the specified 95 Machines have a look at the knowledge base article for workarounds or resolutions.
(This problem is basically not an error)

I don’t know why I missed this article when I searched Microsoft, but it really helped. Old Lantastic was still running on these clients from an upgrade to NT Server 3.5 years ago. The installs were currupt and hadn’t uninstalled completely. Afterremoving the files and configs remaining on the clients and a reboot, the Bad Domains were gone and didn’t come back. I had thought it was a Windows 95/NT interaction problem and wasn’t even looking for old software.

Are you using WINS proxy for the LINUX machines? Why use WINS at all? Are you subnetted? Maybe u don’t need WINS, and you shouldn’t even bother with the network neighborhood browser, since it’s all buggy to begin with. Just start, run, \\ipaddress

I’m using WINS on NT Servers to reduce broadcast traffic on an ever growing, single segment network and for a future RAS and VPN project. The Linux boxes just do internal Web Sites and email, no Samba.

I do not have much knowledge on wins but if you are able to type in the names to be removed, I would look up the ascii tables for the relevant keystrokes.

Have you tried removing those names from the WINS database? Under WINS Manager, ‘Show Database’. On the bottom left is a button to delete highlighted entries. It’ll prompt you to either delete ot tombstone the record. In this case I’d say tombstone.

It does look like bogus workgroup entries on those Windows PC. (From the above I assume that you also set the ‘Workgroup’ name in the network properties on all the PCs to display the Domain Name?). Do the wierd Domain names actually go awaywhen you power off – and leave off those six PCs?

Also, within deleting and recreating WINS, have you rebooted the primary WINS server and PDC?

NT Resource kit contains the browmon.exe utility to help you check for browsing problems.

Thanks, but I have tried to tombstone or delete the entries, they just came back with the next reboot of the client.
