How do I setup a Diskless 95/98/NT works

By stevenm1 ·
I have a NT server/Linux environment and need
to create a workstation setup for 95
(OSR2.x), 98, and NT4 (Workstation).

The PC's have a NIC card with a 32K boot-Prom
installed.

I have gotten the test PC to successfully
boot from the network to load DOS 6.22 and
win95 (in command prompt mode only!).

The PC is a 486-100 on a 3com 3C509B NIC with
32 Meg of ram (real PC's used will be min
P-200 with 64 MB ram - this is just a test
PC). The NT server is version 4 with SP6a

***Win2k is ***NOT*** an option!!!***
All Linux or NT4 solutions ONLY PLS.

** I need a solution for ALL 3 OS's 95-b, 98,
AND NT)

I'm offering all the points I have.

Steve M.

How do I setup a Diskless 95/98/NT works

by McKayTech In reply to How do I setup a Diskless ...

A commercial Linux-based solution is highly unlikely because of Microsoft licensing restrictions.

Support for remote booting essentially died with Win95 and all attention since then has been directed towards Terminal Services, first as an add-onto NT4 and then included with Windows2000.

So the only solution I could propose would be to remote-boot into Windows95, then run a Terminal Services client against your NT4 server. Within that session, I believe you could present a Win95, Win98 or NT desktop.
For the sake of your project, I'll hope someone proves me wrong but I don't see any option other than that.

regards!

How do I setup a Diskless 95/98/NT works

It should be quite possible! Fronm what I have learned about the remote-boot service I am guessing that all I need to do is get the boot block and call it "bootsect.com" then copy the right 9x OS files into the correct places then modify the .fit file. I am having a VERY rough time learning about the remoteboot service function(s). I have paid and opened up ad MS case and they are having a rough time finding someone who knows how the remoteboot service is supposed to work EVEN with win95! I need answers about remoteboot service.

To Steve,

Diskless workstations are only supported on Dos,MSDOS, Win 3.1, 3.11 machines and are never supported with Win95/98/NT Wks. The last 3 OS's need a harddisk to store their OS so it cannot be run on command line only or as what you called Diskless Workstations.

On your statement, Win95 on command prompt only, it wasnt Win95 thats working there, its the full MSDOS redirector that communicating to the server.

I have found out that win NT is NOT able to run without a HDD BUT I KNOW win95 is and if Win95 can do it so can Win98 since the file structure changes were minimal. (After all ALL the OS file names are the SAME!)
