How many Computers can one tech support

I am working with an organization on a new IT organization chart and I was wondering what is the current industry standard on how many PCs one technician can support. I want to make sure we don’t overextend the tech. The person will be working in a PC/Mac environment running Netware with approximately 800 computers and 3000 users.

    Thanks

It depends alot on the apps that are running and on how self-suficient your users are. Anything beyond 100 computers would be stretching your people too thin.

One important factor is the homogeneity of the computers. Is each one a cookie-cutter copy of the other? This is much easier to support than 800 computers with one of three different OS’, network cards, desktop suites, etc.

Assuming that the workstations are at least 80% similar, I would not go beyond the 100 / technician number.

In addition to the above answers that are correct in that if the hardware and software are as similar as possible, location of PC’s supported is also important. Are they all in one building? One floor? Does the Technician have space to work on PC’s exclusively? Does the organization have a Help Desk Ticket system in place to set priorities for the technician and to eliminate nuisance calls such as I can’t remember my password? You may want to consider at least one more technician just for back up purposes if the locations of the supported PC’s and users is spread out and there is no help desk ticket system in place, or you will either burn out your technician quickly or never see him\her for days (and perhaps weeks) at a time!! Best wishes.

It depends, naturally. One study I saw depended on environment. If you were a Wall Street trading floor, they suggested the ratio to be 25:1. If a typical office environment with a standardized infrastructure the ratio could be 125:1. At my lastcompany I was supporting 6000 desktops and my desktop support staff was running at about 250:1. It was tight, very tight and when I left I was trying to bump that up, but the economic times were not conducive to that.
