How permanent is a permanent job offer ?

By swapan ·
Hello,
A friend of mine has been offered a permanent job offer in Europe and originally belongs to Asia. He is thinking of moving his family along whit his school going children to his new country. His dilema is if he is forced to take a decision infew years time to leave that job or is forced out even though the job may be permanent at present he cannot be again shifting his family and school going children back to his home country or new country.Should he have some backup strategy or plan sothat the family do not suffer because of the everchanging IT world requirements or not move his family at all in this kind of situation as well.
Any suggestions from experienced IT professionals and familymen are welcome.
regards,

I'm sorry, but no permanent job is permanent, no permanent job offer is permanent - and there's no guarantees or promises at all. For the most part a permanent job is longer lasting than a temporary one, but not always. There's no guarantee that once your friend moves that he won't have the heartache of having to move again. Life isn't that simple. But you can do everything you can to improve your skills and try for lifelong employability since there's no promise of lifelong employment. I've moved somewhere like 20-25 times - It's hard not having any roots. But then, yor friend can view this as an adventure. The key is to train the children on how to build friendships, stay in touch with old ones, how to adapt to new places. It canbe done.

I agree with #2 as well - it helps to have some sort of a backup plan. Your friend may decide that moving isn't all that great of an idea.

It's hard - I've moved at least 18 times in 10 years - you have to uproot and then make friends all over, and you'll find it doesn't happen right away - everything takes time.

nobody said life was easy

A suggestion (this may or may not be appropriate depending on your friend's family situation and finances):
If your friend really wants this job (and the prospective employer will go along with it), take a family trip (longer than just a couple of days) to the country where this prospective job is to get a taste of the new environment. It's possible that there may be such a cultural difference (with the resulting culture shock), the he or his family will not be able to adjust. It would be better to find this out ahead of time instead of after a long-distance move. No job pays well enough to compensate for a miserable home life.

Another option would be for your friend to go ahead of the rest of the family. He may be able to determine that the situation in his new country is not right for his family.

I'm not trying to sound negative. A move from one city to another within the same country can be bad enough. Taking in to account the added cultural differences, moving to another country can be very traumatic for all concerned.

I hate to say this....but it's as "permanent" as their satisfaction with his job performance and only modified by any specifics in his contract (if he signs one).

What he has to determine is does he *want* the job, will he excel at it, will he learn and grow in his career by taking it and will it be a positive move for his family or not. Weighing these things, he should have his answer.

Without a doubt though...all a "permanent" position is is one that is not defined as temporary and ending at a specific date. Nothing more....

I wish your friend good luck!
